I’m Lorelei. Mom, aspiring novelist, wife, teacher, and wearer of many a hat. I currently stay home with my three kids, ages 5, 3, and 6 months.
I also write on this blog about marriage stuff, family stuff, and stuff about my Catholic faith. And whatever else might happen to be on my mind.
The Final Match Night is a work of speculative fiction. It’s a mix of a few genres, pulling from magical realism, modern fable, fabulism, but still grounded in plenty of reality. I also am confident it would appeal to people who aren’t hardcore enthusiasts of the SFF genre realm.
I’m planning to pitch it as THE MATRIX (minus the martial arts) + HANDMAIDS TALE in a world with a BROTHERS GRIMM-like history. Uncovering of truth, pushback against societal control and the consequences of rebellion all surrounded by a dash of magic. The two female protagonists are sisters, and their relationship is complicated by promises made and broken.
Here’s an aesthetic that I think sets the mood. (This was also my first time making one of these. It was pretty fun!)
Why Choose Me?
This novel has been a WIP for 9 years, when I first penned the short story that would become The Final Match Night. I wrote the bulk of the novel within the past five months. My youngest kid is six months old. Which means I buckled down and got it done with a newborn on my hip. I sat down one day, shortly after little Mary was born, and decided I wasn’t going to put off this writing dream of mine any longer. So I made it happen. I went to Starbucks in the evenings and on weekends. I wrote while kiddos napped. And I am bound and determined to keep hustling until I can hold a copy of my book in my hands.
I will work tirelessly at whatever needs to be done to get my MS ready for submission to agents. I would be honored to have the fresh set of eyes as a mentee through this competition. My B.A. is in Creative Writing, and most of those classes were in a workshop format. I have learned to take criticism well and use it to improve my writing. I am not afraid to cut the fat. Whatever it takes.
I’m also great at deadlines. I freelance as an editor, and always deliver before my work is due. I am a columnist for Catholic Stand and meet my deadline each and every month. I find a way.
Attn: Potential Writer Friends!
This is my first foray into the world of writers. The past several months writing my manuscript have been lonely ones, and I’m excited to get involved in a community of people who, too, have voices and stories in their heads. You people get it. I’m pumped.
I am very interested in connecting with other writers in the community. If you think we might be a good fit for checking out each other’s queries or pages, drop me a DM or contact me via this site. Even if our genre’s are different! I would love to get to know you and your book more.
I am a mega Josh Groban fan, and may or may not have planned an entire trip to NYC to see him on Broadway. But came back with this treasure, so, money well spent.
